25th November End Violence Against Women Campaign

         

Throughout 2017, The UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE to End Violence against Women campaign will continue to highlight specific Sustainable Development Goals through its Orange Days theme by putting a spotlight on the implications and consequences of violence against women and girls within the most marginalized groups, including refugees, migrants, minorities, indigenous peoples, and populations affected by conflict and natural disasters, amongst others. These actions will culminate in global mobilization to “Leave no one behind” during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign (from 25 November – 10 December).

Why this International Day:

• Violence against women is a human rights violation.
• Violence against women is a consequence of discrimination against women, in law and also in practice, and of persisting inequalities between men and women.
• Violence against women impacts on, and impedes, progress in many areas, including poverty eradication, combating HIV/AIDS, and peace and security.
• Violence against women and girls is not inevitable. Prevention is possible and essential.
• Violence against women continues to be a global pandemic.

International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM

Female genital mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons and is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women.

It reflects deep-rooted inequality between the sexes and constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against women and girls. The practice also violates their rights to health, security and physical integrity, their right to be free from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, and their right to life when the procedure results in death.

Malala, a Powerful Girl

Malala Yousafzai (born 1997) is a Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest ever winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. Malala is from the Swat Valley in northwest Pakistan, where the local Taliban has banned girls from attending school. Malala, whose family ran a chain of local schools, publicly stood against the Taliban’s actions and launched an international movement.

On October 9th, 2012, a gunman from the Taliban boarded a school bus and shot her in the head. Malala remained in critical condition in the days following the attack but survived. Since then, she has continued to advocate internationally for women’s education.

What’s the best predictor of success in a person’s life, including when it comes to goals in education? “Grit,” says psychologist Dr. Angela Lee Duckworth.

Dr. Angela Lee Duckworth is an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. Angela studies non-IQ competencies, including self-control and grit, that predict success both academically and professionally. Watch this short video, it's a fascinating talk for everyone.

 So what is grit? Find out in her TED Talk, in which Duckworth explains that grit is a better indicator of personal success than IQ, family income and other factors. Take the grit test yourself.

'The Motherhood feat. Fiat 500L'

Fiat has launched a funny new advertisement featuring a woman rapping about being a mother.

Including a surprisingly infectious hip-hop backing track, the advert titled 'The Motherhood feat. Fiat 500L' sees the young mum rapping with her baby and toddlers by her side.




 The advert is somewhat similar to a 2010 advert by Toyota called 'Swagger Wagon'. Watch the ad below:
