Heartwarming Christmas Adverts 2017

BBC One’s heartwarming Christmas advert left viewers in tears - with some branding it “the best Christmas advert of the year.”
The two-minute cartoon ad tells the story of a single dad trying to make ends meet over Christmas, while his daughter rehearses for the school Christmas concert.
She practices her dance routine to Clean Bandit’s “Symphony” while her hard-working dad seemingly carries on oblivious.
After feeling ignored by her dad, the girl steps out on stage for her performance and freezes when she thinks he isn’t there to support her.
Just as the girl is on the verge of tears, her dad steps up from behind his phone to remind her of the all-important dance moves she’s been practicing.
The dad and daughter duo perform her Christmas routine together, and it’s clear he’s been paying attention all along.

What is BOXING DAY?

Boxing Day is observed every year on December 26.

Many historians think the holiday’s name is derived from the church practice of opening alms boxes the day after Christmas and distributing money to the poor.

Why give Christmas gifts the day after Christmas? Because the servants spent Christmas and Christmas Eve trying to pull off big holiday dinners for their masters.

Like most Western holidays, Boxing Day has become pretty commercialized. With big sales and bigger crowds, Boxing Day is the British answer to Black Friday.

Another touching Xmas ad

Another Christmas-themed ad, This one from Polish auction site Allegro is called English for Beginners. It's touching, funny, and has some excellent ideas for learning English on your own.

LESSON IDEAS

1. Stop the video at 16s. What do you think the ad is going to be about?
2. Stop at 47s. Why do you think the old man wants to learn English?
3. Discuss the various techniques the old man uses to learn English (all of which are excellent!)
4. Stop ad at 2m04s. Where is the man going?
5. Stop ad at 2m29. Who is he going to see?
6. Stop ad at 2m37. Who do you think the young man and the woman are?
7. Who is the little girl?
8. We still don't know what the ad is for, so that can be the final question.

Mog's Christmas Calamity

Children's writer Judith Kerr has revived Mog for this year's Sainsbury's advert. "Mog’s Christmas Calamity" is the first story in the series since 2002, when the stripey feline died of old age in the 16th title, "Goodbye, Mog". Watch the new Sainsbury’s Christmas Advert starred by Mog, the forgetful cat, that sets off a chain of unfortunate events which almost ruin Christmas for the Thomas family.
