BBC New Colony of Flying Penguins

Flying penguins or Miracles of Evolution is a BBC film trailer made in 2008 as an April Fools' Day hoax.

The film was advertised as compelling evidence for Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. It was largely set on King George Island which is 75 miles from Antarctica. The Daily Telegraph wrote that the film was "an instant classic. It is accomplished work of this kind that guarantees the BBC its unique status."

The BBC website still claims that it may attempt to film the flying penguins again because the original film did not explain how such small birds, that are not used to flying, could survive long migrations over vast, stormy oceans.
Miracles of Evolution was filmed with animated penguins for the occasion of April Fools' Day, and to promote the BBC iPlayer.

MSN included "The BBC's flying penguins" as one of their twelve "Hoaxes of the decade."

April Fool's Day 2016

April Fools' Day (sometimes called All Fools' Day) is celebrated every year on 1 April by playing practical jokes and spreading hoaxes. The jokes and their victims are called April fools. People playing April Fool jokes expose their prank by shouting April Fool.

Some newspapers, magazines, and other published media report fake stories, which are usually explained the next day or below the news section in small letters. Although popular since the 19th century, the day is not a public holiday in any country.

Watch the video below to learn about this typically British tradition.

April Fool's Pranks

April Fools' Day is an unofficial holiday celebrated by many people around the world on April 1st. It's a day where people revel in playing all kinds of tricks on friends, family, and peers. Another name for April Fools' Day is All Fools' Day.

No one really knows where or when the holiday began. It seems most likely that the holiday has slowly evolved into its present form over hundreds--maybe thousands, even--of years. Both the Romans and the Hindus had holidays around the vernal equinox. So we can guess that the origins probably began with festivities held at this time of year.

In ages past, people often considered this as the New Year, because it marked a change in seasons. With the disappearance of snow and cold weather, people could prepare the fields for crops. There was the birth of livestock and other animals, too. Nature came out of its months' long slumber.

But how did ancient festivals welcoming spring get connected with playing pranks?

Still, they all pale in comparison to the best prank ever recorded, in my view. Take a look at this previous post.

Strange Penguins (BBC documentary)

Film maker and writer Terry Jones discovers a colony of penguins, which are unlike any other penguins in the world. It's hard to believe but a video is worth a thousand words!

"April Fools' Day or All Fools' Day is a day celebrated in many countries on April 1.

The earliest recorded association between April 1 and foolishness can be found in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (1392).

As April Fools’ is celebrated in different ways throughout the world, it is unknown exactly how the tradition originated. Some cultures saw it as the first day of spring, celebrating with general merriment and feasting, and certain calendars may consider it the first day of the year. One theory for the terming of an April Fool was that some refused to follow these calendars that recognized April 1st as the first day of the year, which resulted in being called an April Fool.

The Feast of Fools was a term given to many medieval festivals celebrated during the fifth-sixteenth centuries in Europe, but particularly at the end of December. These celebrations developed a tradition of practical jokes, especially when observed in Spain.
